Beginnings.

I'm writing a novel (It sounds so funny to say that. Both entirely respectable and equally pretentious).

I spend a lot of time thinking about it (only some fraction of that time is actually spent in actually writing). This morning I woke up early and thought about it before I got out of bed. It occurred to me that:

A). I wasn't doing enough to capture my thoughts as they occurred. A blog would be a good vehicle to do a better job of that. As part of the endeavor, I'm trying to write the whole thing using Google's free word processing application on line. It made sense then, to use Blogger, another free application from Google.

B). When the novel is done, I'd like to get it published. Sell it to a publisher. Doing so isn't easy. But the publishing universe (more specifically, the way books are marketed) has changed substantially in the last ten years and it's given geeks like me a new set of tools to maximize our chances of making it to print. A blog can be one of those tools - a supplementary text that can be used to help raise awareness, display our commitment to self-promotion and a great source of free (to both the reader AND the publisher), additional content related to the book.

I thought about it for a bit and decided those were all good things (plus, it was another thing I could do in the name of writing without actually writing), so I got out of bed, booted up my monster gaming machine-cum-online word processor and set up this page.

Going forward, I'll do my best to capture my thoughts and experiences as I write (and think about writing) this book. It is my intention to capture content ideas, tough decisions, talk about the publishing world, related my experiences writing a novel without MS Word, post a ton of related links and experiment with the format of the blog.
