Staying productive on an off day.

I'm home from work today tending to the monkeys. Between them and the dogs, I don't hope to get a lot of work on the novel done today. My hopes - an hour of work on the outline and thirty minutes of actual writing (still in limbering up mode pending a solid final draft of the outline).

My biggest challenge today will be to spend what little quiet time there is writing and not playing video games, reading Leah's new copy of Rolling Stone or playing with my new cell phone.

Thinking about all the writers out there in the world (I am told that there are approximately 80,000 new books published each year), I imagine that many of them face the same problem - how to stay focused and productive. Googling "staying productive writing" doesn't tell me much. "Writers" and "productivity" yields more results, but nothing that leaps off the search page. Mostly workplace productivity and software reviews. Lots about mobile devices (I wonder if anyone has written a novel entirely on a mobile device - laptops not included). I'll do a bit more looking into at a later date and post the results here.
